Ghana to give 20 million cocoa seedlings to farmers free of charge in 2012

Mr Tony Fofie, Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has urged farmers to sustain best practices that had over the years helped the country to produce good quality cocoa beans.

He asked them to use only the prescribed chemicals to spray the cash crop to prevent it from disease and to increase yield.

Mr Fofie was addressing a farmers’ forum at Antoakrom in the Bekwai Municipality as part of his working tour of some cocoa growing communities in the Ashanti Region.

He had earlier visited New Edubiase, Asokwa and the Poano Seed Production Unit.

Mr Fofie said the Board would supply 20 million cocoa seedlings to the farmers free of charge next year.

He said the COCOBOD would check purchasing clerks of the licensed buying companies from cheating the farmers.

Mr Fofie said the one million tones cocoa production was due to the hard work of the farmers and government interventions such as the mass cocoa spraying exercise and the application of fertilizers.

Mr Kwasi Gorkeh Sekyim, Managing Director of the Quality Control Company Limited , asked the farmers properly ferment and dried  their cocoa beans.
