Ghana Registered Nurses elect new national executives

The Ghana Registered Nurses Association at the weekend elected Mr Kwaku Asante-Krobea, a former General Secretary of the association as its President for the next four years.

Other elected members were: Mr Cosmas H. Alhassan and Mr Adinkra Amo Kwame first and second Vice Presidents respectively, Mrs Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, General Secretary, and Mr Eric Cannor Apperkon, Assistant general Secretary.

The rest were: Mrs Georgina Belinda Nortey, Treasurer; Mr Tirah Haruna, Assistant Treasurer; Mr John Dubik, Public Relations Officer; and Mr Emmanuel Abanga, Assistant Public Relations Officer.

The elected officers constitute the National Executive Committee headed by the GRNA president with executive power to implement policies and decisions taken by the National Council and National Delegates’ Conference.

The officers were elected at the 13th Biennial National Delegates Congress of the Association in Accra attended by local, district and regional branches as well as the national executive committee and observed by the Ghana News Agency.

The GRNA is the exclusive mouthpiece for all nurses and midwives in matters that affect them.

The mandate of the new officers include bringing all practicing nurses and midwives in Ghana under a unified body; advance the interest of the nursing and midwifery profession; and to promote a better understanding and dignity of the profession.

Others are to maintain the honour and independence of the profession with special reference to professional standard, conduct, discipline and etiquette; promote nursing and midwifery research; and promote and support law reforms on matters affecting the nursing and midwifery profession.

The executives, who would be sworn into office in January 2012, are also mandated to affiliate and promote good relations with the International Council of Nurses, Commonwealth Nurses Federation, International Confederation of Midwives and similar organization of Nurses in other countries.
