Rotary Club of Sweden to construct GH¢60,000 Vocational Centre at Apaaso

Nana Kwarteng Karikari III, Chief of Akyem Awisa in the Birim South District, has stressed the importance of vocational training, saying it  would reduce unemployment in the country if taken seriously.

He therefore appealed to the people to disregard the erroneous impression that vocational schools were meant for school drop-outs.

Nana Karikari was breaking the grounds for the construction of a GH¢60,000 Vocational Training Centre at the Awisa-Apaaso Salvation Army School at the weekend.

The project is being sponsored by Umea City Forsta Frukost Klub (FFRK), the Rotary Club  of Sweden.

Nana Karikari appealed to his people to offer communal labour to ensure the early completion of the project.

He noted that since the area was without any second cycle institution, and that the provision of the vocational centre was “good news for the people”.

Nana Karikari later conferred the “Amanohene” title on Mr Samuel Appiah-Kubi, chairman of the Ghana Union Sweden, who is the brain behind the project, for his enormous contributions to the development of the area over the years.

Mr Appiah-Kubi, who is also an Honorary Member of Umea City FFRK, Sweden, advised parents not to engage children of school-going age in farming and other economic activities at the expense of their education.

He indicated that the Club had been sponsoring pupils in the town for the past 15 years by providing them with school uniforms and text books, as well as payment of school fees.

Mr Kwasi Ahenkora-Anti, chairman of the Herald Foundation, Ghana, a non-governmental organization, underlined the importance of skill training.

He said the provision of the Centre would equip the youth with the necessary skills to earn a decent living, thereby preventing them from migrating to the urban cities to look for non-existent jobs.
