A tipper truck and a water tanker yesterday Monday November 7, 2011crashed into a two-room house at Abofu in Achimota in a freak accident that resulted in the destruction of part of the building and an adjoining drain.

By some twist of fate, no one was injured although the driver of the tipper truck was reported to have been taken to hospital.

When the Daily Graphic got to the scene about 1:30 p.m. the two trucks were stuck into the building with a tow truck preparing to pull them.

The electrical gadgets and other items in the building had been crushed as a result of the impact of the crash.

An eyewitness, Yahya Bashiru, told the Daily Graphic that the driver of the water tanker, with registration number BA 2608 C, was driving through the town when the driver of the tipper truck, with registration number GW 5429 -11, attempted to overtake the tanker.

He said the tipper truck driver was speeding and, in an attempt to overtake the water tanker, his truck hit the tanker on the side and the impact carried both vehicles into the building.

Luckily, occupants of the apartment had gone out.

The owner of the apartment, Mohammed Habib Alu, told the Daily Graphic that he was a Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) official at the Aflao Station in Accra and that he was at work when he received a call from neighbours that two heavy duty trucks had run into his apartment.

He said he could not readily quantify the damage that had been done as a result of the accident.

The Assembly member of the Abofu Electoral Area, Mr James Akogo, advised drivers to exercise caution when driving through the town.

He said the town’s roads were narrow and failure to drive cautiously could easily result in the loss of lives.

As of the time the Daily Graphic was leaving the scene, some policemen had arrived and were trying to restore order and help to direct vehicular traffic.
