AGI, IFC launch Business Edge Training Programme for SMEs

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the International Finance Corporation have launched a Business Edge training programme to help enhance the capacity of micro small and medium scale enterprises.

The training will be delivered by local consultants using IFC’s range of management training products and services, especially designed for owners and managers of SMEs.

It includes 55 different modules in five different topics, namely: Marketing, Human Resources, Production and Operations, Finance and Accounting, and Productivity Skills.

Mr Samuel Appenteng, AGI Vice-President for SMEs, said AGI’s objective was to use the training as a strategic tool to improve the operations of businesses.

He said the target for the training was not only the business owners, but also their staffs in various departments who could register for the different modules.

Mr Appenteng said AGI would organize the training on regular basis so as to ensure that as many SMEs would be able to participate.

Mr Mario Joao Gomes, Operations Officer IFC, said IFC was creating a profitable partnership among corporate and SMEs, suppliers, distributors and customers.

He said the training would be given based on the needs assessment of the various SMEs and these needs would be customized into lessons for the SMEs.

Mr Gomes said IFC had trained and accredited eight local consultants, which would deliver the business edge training to the SMEs.

Mr Eric Agyare, Deputy Team Leader, Business Development Services Fund, said SMEs could avail themselves of the funds to procure training and capacity building services to get them better prepared in the performance of their task.

However, he said, the beneficiaries must be ready to provide the matching fund for the release of the grant.

Launching it, Nana Owusu-Afari, President of AGI, said the SMEs sector was fraught with many challenges, but expressed the hope that with continuous training they could overcome the problems and improve on performance.
