Gomoa West Assembly takes steps to collect loans

The Gomoa West District Assembly has formed  a committee comprising the Presiding Member, District Coordinating Director and Chairmen of the Sub-Committees of the Assembly to retrieve outstanding debts owed the Micro Finance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).

Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, District Chief Executive who announced this at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the First Session of the Sixth Assembly at Apam, said at a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting at Elmina recently, it came to light that the District owed MASLOC GH¢229,000.00 from 2001 to 2007.

He said the heavy indeptedness to MASLOC by the Assemblies had resulted in the inability of the Centre to continue the poverty reduction programme by offering loans to people to either expand their businesses or establish new ones.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah said the PAC directed the Assembly to retrieve the amount from the debtors without delay.

He appealed to Rural Banks that disbursed the loans to cooperate with the Committee to identify and locate the debtors.

Mr Aidoo-Mensah said any Bank which refuses to cooperate would be prosecuted and loans they disbursed collected from them.

He also appealed to the defaulters to settle their loans without delay to avoid embarrassment to make it possible for MASLOC to continue giving out the loans to alleviate poverty in the District.
