Workers Union welcomes government’s decision to create more districts

The Local Government Workers Union (LGWU) of Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has welcomed government’s decision to create 43 new municipals and districts in the country as announced by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo during President John Evan Atta Mills’ Greater Accra Regional tour last week.

In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Wednesday signed by Mr Joe Boahen, General Sectretary of the Union noted that the creation of the municipals and districts would enhance the administration of local governance and help accelerate development process, while promoting government’s “Better Ghana” agenda.

It said the large size of some districts had not been the best in terms of effective administration and equitable distribution of resources.

The statement said many areas in the country had been lagging behind in the development process largely because State resources had not been sufficient enough to impact on those areas.

“However, with the creation of the new municipals and districts, many of the areas that had hitherto not been catered for, will now be given proper attention for development,” it added.

LGWU welcomed all prospective staff of the new municipal and district assemblies as automatic members of the LGWU to an onerous service to Mother Ghana and particularly encourage them to give their best for the country’s development.

The statement said ”Although the task ahead is very daunting, given the developmental challenges of the municipalities and districts, it is our conviction that with determination and hard work, they can succeed and make Ghana a better place to live”.

It pledged LGWU’s commitment to protect and defend the interest of the staff at all times and ensured that their conditions of service were adequately promoted.

However, the statement cautioned that there might be some individuals or groups that would seek to deceive them into acting in a manner that would not be in their best interest therefore, they must be vigilant and not give in to such acts of deception by any individual or group of persons.
