Lack of vehicle delays court proceedings in Cape Coast

Mrs Florence Kai Otu, a judge at the Cape Coast circuit court, has  expressed concern about the frequent  break down of vehicles used to convey prisoners from the Ankaful Prison to court.

She said this had resulted in delay in the prosecution of many cases before her since the prosecutors are unable to bring accused persons to court, using lack of vehicles as an excuse.

Mrs Otu told the GNA in an interview that  the situation  was unfortunate that it was making it difficult for her to administer justice  since in most instances the cases had to be adjourned.

She said even in some cases the court had to move to the Ankaful Prisons for court proceedings but this had not been helpful to the court because thecourt wes not handling criminal cases only.

Mrs Otu said the situation did not also allow accused persons in  prison custody to meet their lawyers and that as a matter of  urgency a vehicle should be provided to the  police court unit to help address the situation.

She said by the end of the month if the problem was not solved she would be forced to move her court to the  Ankaful Prisons since many of the cases involved remand prisoners.
