President Mills announces measures to contain doctors’ strike

President John Atta Mills

President John Evans Atta Mills has announced measures to contain a strike by doctors in public hospitals and health institutions because of a dispute with the Fair Wages and salaries Commission (FWSC) over their placement on the Single Spine Salary Structure.

A statement issued in Accra on Sunday night by Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Communications and Acting Minister of Health, said his priority in this situation, among others, was to protect life by ensuring that adequate alternate measures were put in place to address emergency cases and the general wellbeing of patients even in the face of the crisis.

The President repeated his call on the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to return to work especially as the law did not permit them to engage in strike actions considering that they were essential service providers.

On the part of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the President asked that they ensured they maintained an open door and continuous engagement with the leadership of the GMA and other Professional Unions and Associations in the Health Sector.
