Doctors attend to patients at Sunyani Regional Hospital despite strike action

Doctors at the Ophthalmology Unit of the Regional Hospital in Sunyani on Monday defied the indefinite strike action initiated by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and attended to patients.

The GMA at the weekend declared a nationwide indefinite strike action by members over delays by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to migrate them onto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the hospital, patients with various sight-related ailments were waiting in queues whilst others were receiving treatment from doctors on duty.

A community health nurse at the facility told the GNA on condition of anonymity that though the doctors were on strike patients admitted before the GMA strike action were receiving treatment.

The community health nurse indicated that management of the hospital was holding an emergency meeting on the matter.

The situation was no different at the Sunyani Municipal Hospital where the medical officer in charge and the other doctors were supposed to be in a meeting.

No patient was however found at the Out Patients Department.
