Accra Stadium pitch under stress – Expert

The pitch at the Accra Sports Stadium is fast deteriorating following a series of activities taking place at the arena, but grass expert Frank Boahene charged with the maintenance of the playing field says ‘it is only under stress.’

The pitch, which has hosted several musical concerts in recent times has turned yellowish with pockets of potholes which have made playing hectic.

Premier League action returned to the Accra Stadium on Sunday and whiles patrons find the sight of the pitch unpleasant with players complaining of poor quality that disturbed ball control, Boahene, Chief Executive of Green Grass Technology insist there is nothing to worry about.

He told GNA Sports in Accra on Monday that ‘the pitch is only under stress, which is very usual because it has been hosting other activities recently.

Since organizers of concerts and other activities mounted their platforms for days, it deprives us from maintaining it during that period.

“So naturally, the grass goes through some shock after the concert or programs. If we are going to use it as host of other activities apart from football, then such things must be expected.”

Boahene said the field will require a period of seven to 14 days without further interruption to fully recover.

He said his charges will embark on vigorous watering in the ensuing days to ensure the pitch regained its form.

“Hopefully by the end of next week, we will see the green-looking pitch it used to be.

We have already put a lot of sand on it and loading it with a lot of water so it can recover very fast.”

The national stadium’s pitch was reconstructed when Ghana hosted 15 other countries during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

The arena in recent times has been host to various religious, social and musical activities with the latest being the ‘Mavado live in Ghana’ gig on Saturday.
