Bawku to get additional district

Pusiga in the Upper East Region has been earmarked for a district status due to socio-economic opportunities in the area.

Pusing, which is part of the Bawku Municipal, generates about 85 percent of the total revenue for the Bawku Municipal Assembly.

The area has about 10 busy markets and it is an entry point to most of the West African countries, including Togo and Burkina Faso.

Mr. Simon Akunye, Member of Parliament for the area, told the GNA in an interview that the government was committed to give the area a separate district and that the issue is before cabinet.

Mr. Akunye said Pusiga was well endowed with a number of economic potentials including share nuts, cereals, animals and vegetable.

He said the youth in the area were poised to support the assembly if the area was given the district status, adding that majority of the youth were into business and that they stood the chance of mobilizing revenue for the area.

Mr Akunye appealed to all stakeholders including traditional authorities to prepare the ground for the assembly to take off smoothly.
