Newmont Mining selected again for Dow Jones Sustainability World Index 2011

US gold mining company, Newmont Mining Corporation has been selected for the 2011 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) 2011.

A press release from Newmont copied to ghanabusinessnews.com says this is the fifth consecutive time that the miner has been selected. It is also the only mining company to make the list, the release added.

The DJSI were launched in 1999. The Indexes are the first global indexes tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Based on the cooperation of Dow Jones Indexes and SAM they provide asset managers with reliable and objective benchmarks to manage sustainability portfolios, Dow Jones says.

According to the press release, the DJSI World includes approximately 300 global companies identified as leaders in the areas of sustainability, economic, environmental and social performance.

“In 2007, Newmont became the first gold company included in the DJSI World and has maintained inclusion on the DJSI North America Index since 2006. In March, Newmont Mining Corporation was also ranked “in the top 50” on Corporate Responsibility (CR) Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens List,” it says.

Dave Schummer, Regional Senior Vice President for Africa Operations was cited in the release as saying, “Thanks to the efforts of Newmont Ghana’s employees and those from other Newmont operations around the globe, we can all be proud of this acknowledgment of Newmont’s environmental and social performance.”

Newmont’s Ghana subsidiary Newmont Ghana Gold is currently mining the second largest mine in Ghana at Ahafo in the Brong Ahafo region.

In April the company announced that it will invest between $300 and $375 million in its Akyem project in Ghana following approval of the funds by its Board of Directors.

The Akyem mine which is located in the Birim North District of the Eastern region of Ghana is said to have a measured and indicated reserve of 7.7-million ounces of gold.
