Health insurance capitation would reduce abuses of NHIS – Dr Agyapong

The successful implementation of the health insurance capitation would significantly reduce the persistent abuse of the national health insurance scheme (NHIS), Dr Irene Agyapong, chairperson of the capitation sub-committee, has said.

She said the practice where some subscribers jump from one health facility to the other within a matter of days, if allowed unchecked, could collapse the scheme.

Dr Agyapong, who is also the Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, was addressing a meeting with staff of the Asante-Akim South District Assembly at Juaso during a working visit to the area.

It was meant to sensitize the workers on the capitation being piloted in the Ashanti Region.

She said the new payment system would among other benefits streamline claims, refund to service providers and prevent delays.

This would end the occasional suspension of service to subscribers by service providers due to non-payment of claims and thereby enhance the quality healthcare.

Dr Agyapong said there should be no doubt that the capitation would assist to improve doctor-patient relationship since subscribers would be restricted to one preferred primary care provider.

Mr William Mensah, District Manager of the Scheme, appealed to subscribers to choose facilities closer to them and said cases beyond their chosen facilities would be referred to other hospitals.
