SESSA Games 2011 officially commences with flag hoisting

The 2011 edition of the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games has officially commenced in Accra.

A flag hoisting ceremony was held on Thursday at the Open Court of the headquarters of the Ghana Prisons Service to signify the official commencement of the 12th edition of the biennial games.

Personnel from the participating services made up of the Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority hoisted the flags of their respective units and the national flag to mark the official beginning of the competition.

Kwabena Owusu Acheampong, Deputy Minister of Interior in an opening address emphasized that the SESSA Games has served as a breeding ground for talents search in the various disciplines at the national level.

He expressed the hope that this year’s event will churn out more talents of international repute to represent the nation at major competitions.

Michael Kofi Bansah, Acting Director of the Ghana Prisons Service said the main event scheduled for 21-28 October will see the security personnel battling for honours in disciplines such as football, volleyball, handball, basketball, boxing, hockey, tug-of-war and athletics.

He said the theme of the event “SESSA at 25: Promoting Unity through Sports”, underscores the need for the Security Services to foster unity and solidarity among its personnel.

Mr Bansah who is also Chairman of the Security Services Sports Council, (SESSCO) by virtue of the Prisons Service being the hosts of the competition, commended the government for its continuous support towards the sustainance of the Games over the years.

There was an open day and exhibitions by the various Security Services.
