Ex-President Mbeki arrives in Accra to launch Kufuor Foundation

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki arrived in Accra on Monday to participate in the launching of the John A. Kufuor Foundation.

He was met on arrival by Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, officials of his outfit and State protocol.

Programme of activities for the launching released by the Office of Former President Kufuor said Former President Horst Koehler of Federal Republic of Germany was expected in Accra on Monday evening for the function.

The Foundation, an initiative of former President Kufuor, consists of the John A. Kufuor Centre for Leadership, Governance and Development, to be based at the University of Ghana, Legon, and the John A. Kufuor Presidential Library and Museum at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi.

Former President Koehler will cut the sod for the start of work on the Centre at the University of Ghana on Tuesday, September 20 at 14.30 hours and deliver the inaugural lecture at the Great Hall, UG, at 15:30 hours.

The lecture will be on the topic – “Walking the Tightrope: Balancing State, Market and Society,” to be chaired by Professor Ernest Aryittey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana.

Former President Mbeki will be the Speaker at a dinner/dance in the evening at the Banquet Hall, State House.

The three former Presidents will visit the site for the Presidential Library and Museum under construction at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, and lay a plague to mark the occasion on Wednesday, September 21.

They will be received in audience by Professor William Otoo Ellis, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST and interact with faculty members and students.

They will pay courtesy calls on Vice-President John Dramani Mahama at the Castle, Osu, and Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manyhia Palace in Kumasi.

President Mbeki would also be the Special Guest at a national wreath-laying ceremony on Wednesday, September 21, at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum to commemorate the third Founder’s Day anniversary celebration.

Vice President John Dramani Mahama will be the Guest of Honour, according to a statement signed in Accra on Monday by Deputy Minister of Information, Baba Jamal.

It said the programme would commence at 08.30 hours prompt and would be open to the public.
