Former US Ambassador to Ghana, Mary Yates goes to Sudan

The US government has appointed Mary Carlin Yates  to serve as an interim Charge d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, beginning September 1, 2011.

Prior to her new role, Mary Yates served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs on the White House National Security Staff.

“She will focus on the United States’ priority goals of ending the conflict in Darfur and Southern Kordofan and resolving outstanding issues between Sudan and South Sudan,” said the US State Department in a statement August 31, 2011.

She was the former US Ambassador to Ghana from November 2002 to July 2005.

She was also the former Deputy Commander for Civil Military Affairs at AFRICOM, where she worked to establish key security relationships with numerous African countries, the African Union, and regional organizations.
