The 16th GJA Awards Night is slated for September 9, on the theme: “Giving Impetus to Democracy and Development in Africa: The Role of Investigative Journalism.”

Ms Efua Falconer, Acting Corporate Communications Senior Manager of MTN Ghana, presenting the cheque said her organisation appreciated the contributions made by the media to deepen democracy and support to the private sector to thrive.

She said MTN remained committed towards providing world class products and services and infrastructure to partner the media to enhance the knowledge of the public on socio-economic importance of telecommunications and Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Ms Falconer who lauded the Association, said the theme was appropriate stressing that investigative journalism practice had contributed towards unearthing and confronting issues inimical to development.

“Your theme for the awards…is very significant as we see the Ghanaian media boldly investigating and moving journalism into a higher realm.

“Your deeper probe into issues brings on board different perspectives and facts to help us make informed decisions about our national development agenda.”

Mr Agbeko Azumah, Communications Manager of Newmont Ahafo Mine, pledged the support of his outfit to GJA to enable the Association “push the frontiers of journalism higher.”

Mr Affail Monney, Vice President of GJA who received the cheques expressed gratitude to MTN for their support, described the corporate entity as “a symbol of media investment.”

He observed that whiles others criticised and bemoaned the media over their professional shortcomings and “professional sins”, MTN had invested in the media to ensure it lived to the highest standard of practice.

Mr Monney expressed satisfaction that MTN had contributed towards sustaining and changing the “profile” of the awards night.

He expressed appreciation to the management of Newmont for the kind gesture.
