Ghana Olympic Committee presents certificates to 14 sports administrators

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) on Thursday, presented certificates to 14 sports administrators for successfully completing a course in Olympic Sports Organisation.

The administrators, drawn from the security services, the National Sports Authority (NSA) and educational institutions were taken through effective management practices in sports administration and modern trends in management.

The course was developed and sponsored by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was organized three years ago, but the presentation ceremony of the certificates had to be frozen due to the impasse at the front of the GOC.

Benson Tongo Baba, President of the GOC in an address, said the successful participants will now have an opportunity to pursue further studies in sports management to enable them acquire degrees in sports administration, whilst an opportunity will also be extended for Executive Masters in Sports Administration.

He, however, noted that the course is not meant for enriching one’s Curriculum Vitae and to decorate wardrobes, but it is meant to promote sports administration in the country and called on participants to ensure that they share the knowledge gained with other sports administrators.

Benson Baba said the certificate is an internationally recognized one and the holders will be in a position to render services in the international sports arena including the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

He said there were several courses which were not organized or attended as a result of the impasse, but stated that with the impasse over now, the GOC will take the opportunity to re-apply for those courses, whilst those that require funding from the IOC will also be re-organised.

The GOC President said the long standing impasse which stalled activities of the movement was over and called on all to put the past behind them for a better future.

“Whatever happened in the past is now history, let us look forward to the future and find ways of developing and promoting sports in the country,” Tongo Baba stated.

The GOC has since the resolve of the impasse returned to its offices at Ridge after almost two years of conflict at the Committee following intense power struggle among members.
