Kwesimintsim Hospital lacks blood bank – Medical Superintendent

Dr Jonathan Mensah, Acting Medical Superintendent of the Kwesimintsim Hospital, on Wednesday said the hospital lacked a blood bank refrigerator for emergency cases.

He said the hospital has been without a blood storage facility for a long time despite the increasing patronage by communities around its catchment area.

Dr Mensah said the hospital had improvised the situation by using an ordinary refrigerator but this was inappropriate and could not store blood for a longer period.

He said the absence of the blood bank refrigerator did not allow the hospital to store enough blood for emergency cases.

Dr Mensah said, it was not appropriate to refer patients in emergency conditions to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital due to traffic congestion on the roads in the area.

He said the giving of blood to patients was gradually becoming a key component of the healthcare system and called on benevolent institutions to come to the aid of the hospital to provide quality healthcare.
