Unilever donates $25,000 towards GJA Awards
Mr Bright Blewu, General Secretary of the Ghana Journalist Association, on Monday told journalists to be very cautious about their roles in society and take their gate-keeping roles very seriously.
He said journalists had very critical roles to play in the development of the country and it was important to be professional in all aspects of their work.
Mr Blewu said this during the sponsorship announcement and presentation ceremony of Unilever, Ghana, a major sponsor of the 16th GJA Awards.
He noted that when the Broadcasting Law was implemented it might not be a complete solution to the problems associated with the media, but it would serve as a guide for all journalists in their day-to-day activities.
Mr Blewu thanked Unilever for its immense support over the years towards the GJA Awards and urged the company not to relent in its efforts to support the GJA in other events.
Mr Sampson Dontoh, Human Resource Director of Unilever, said the company relentlessly strived for excellence in all it did and also desired same for its stakeholders, adding, the company was proud to be associated with the Journalist of the Year award.
He said the Journalist Of The Year 2010 would take away a professional enhancement package to the tune of $25,000.
“The package will include working attachments at some of the renowned media houses selected to suit the winner’s area of specialty in the United States of America, interactions with leading members and fellows of the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ), as well as a visit to historic sites of the USA,” he said.
Mr Dontoh noted that the company believed that the award would not only inure to the benefit of the winner, but also to society in diverse ways, saying the package would be of immense benefit to the professional career of the winner.
He congratulated the Mr Samuel Agyemang, the last winner of the prize, for excelling and winning the Commonwealth Broadcasters Association Journalist of the Year award.
Mr Agyemang of Metro TV thanked the GJA and Unilever for the wonderful package and urged all journalists to be confident and focused in doing their work and try as much as possible to put in their best wherever they found themselves as journalists.
