Afro-Asian Development Organisation gives Assembly $40,000 grant to support pepper cultivation for export
The South Tongu District Assembly (STDA) in the Volta Region has received a $40,000 grant from the Afro-Asian Development Organisation (AADO) to support the cultivation of bird eye chilli (pepper) for local consumption and export.
The fund will be used to support some 200 farmers in the district undertaking the project which started this month.
The AADO is an autonomous inter-governmental organisation comprising 30 members from Africa and Asia.
The STDA is among the leading producers of pepper in the country but lack of marketing avenues results in post-harvest losses.
The District Chief Executive, Mr Daniel Amelorku said this in an interaction with the Daily Graphic when he accompanied a delegation from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MOFEP) and the Council of State on a visit to the Fievie Rice project site at Fievie, near Sogakope.
The rice project is expected to release some 40,000 bags of grade ‘A’ rice onto the local market after harvest.
