Youth Association calls for more police personnel in Gonjaland

The Gonjaland Youth Association has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to post more police personnel to the six districts in the area to help to improve law and order.

The Association said the security situation in Gonjaland was disturbing considering the rising number of chieftaincy disputes and the menace of the Fulani herdsmen.

It made the appeal in the press release copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and signed by its Secretary-General Mr Dramani Dari over the weekend.

The Association noted that there were only a total of 56 police personnel in all the six districts of Gonjaland and said the situation was worrying considering the numerous flash points in the area.

Touching on education, the Association noted that although government had made several interventions to improve upon the quality of education in the area, the standard of education continued to fall and therefore appealed to the government to consider establishing a Teacher Training College in Gonjaland.

The Association also appealed to government to increase the budgetary allocation to the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) and to fast track its implementation to “dispel the notion that Ghanaians are only good at policy formulation but flop in implementation”

In a related story, the Police Service has assured the public that it would discharge its constitutional mandate by continuing to fight all manner of crime and reducing the fear of it in the country.

A statement issued in Accra on Monday and signed by DSP Cephas Arthur, Acting Public Relations Director of the Service said: “For the past couple of years the Police Service has put measures in place to confront crimes in the country and brought the level of the phenomenon under control thereby creating a peaceful environment for the people.”

It said the Service had chalked more significant successes in recent times as far as fighting armed robbery and other violent crimes were concerned.

The statement said the Police foiled a robbery attempt over the weekend on the Nsuta-Bechem road in the Brong Ahafo Region, through its operational strategies and killed one of them.

“Though the robbers unfortunately killed the driver of the bus, the robbery was prevented and two more members of the robbery gang were subsequently arrested by the Police with the assistance of the members of the community,” it added.

It said a Police Patrol Team promptly responded to a distress call that a robbery gang were attacking two passenger buses on the Tamale-Bolga road.

The Police confronted them and forced them to abandon their mission and fled.

The statement noted that to effectively and successfully stamp out armed robbery there was the need for strong stakeholder collaboration and expressed appreciation to the media for their role and support in crime combat.

The statement also entreated journalists to be circumspect in reporting crime stories in order to avoid misinformation and factual inaccuracies.
