Help eradicate corruption from society – CHRAJ official

Mr Emmanuel Akpatsi, Akwapem South Municipal Director, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has called on the citizenry to help eradicate corruption from the country.

In his keynote address for 250 participants drawn from Apramso, Ason Yawkrom, Ahweireso Yeboakrom and other civil society groups in the Municipality as part of the 11th Constitutional Week celebration by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the CHRAJ Director stated: “insist on transparency and accountability”.

Speakers among duties analysed the current state, suggest ways of addressing the deficiencies in Ghana’s democracy and the concrete steps required to explore the possibility of sustaining the gains made so far, viewing at : “the state of Ghana’s Democracy, 2011”.

Mr Akpatsi noted that when corruption was condoned, it becomes endemic and scares away investors, result in low productivity, undermines the rule of law and good governance.

According to him, cases which were dominant in society and gradually pushing the country into the throes of poverty included fraud, bribery, embezzlement and nepotism.

Mr Akpatsi was emphatic that time had come for CHRAJ, NCCE and Economic and Organized Crime Office, to collaborate to flush out attitudes that had embolden criminals to commit heinous crimes, since such criminals had people and organizations to defend them.

The Municipal Director of NCCE, Mr Clement Donkor stressed that the Domestic Violence Act 732 was to empower stakeholders to develop a legislative instrument that could enhance holistic support for victims of domestic violence and ensure maximum protection for victims and survivors.

Mr Donkor said the maintenance of absolute freedom and unity and protection of the country’s democracy was part of the Commission’s mandate to organize periodic studies and research, so as to ensure the absolute peace and co-existence of the people to promote peace and protect country’s democracy.

The Municipal Director called for effective networking and coordinated approach to ensure the successful implementation of the Constitution.
