Nana Akufo-Addo

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) donated relief items valued at GH¢80,000 to victims of the recent flood in the Eastern Region at the weekend.

The items included bags of rice, sugar, maize, and student foam mattresses, vegetable cooking oil, wax prints, soap, soft drinks, detergents, bale of used cloths, cements and sachet water.

The flood which hit five districts in the region such as Kwabeng, Fanteakwa, Kwaebibirem, Birim Central, Birim North and West Akyem left five people dead and rendered more than 20,000 people homeless.

Nana Akufo-Addo visited the affected communities such as Ankaase, New Jejeti, Abomosu, Asunafo, Akrofufu, Akwaboso, Muoso, Kwabeng and Asamang Tamfoe all in the Atiwa District, Bosuso and Osino in the Fanteakwa District, and Osenase in the West Akyem District.

The rest of the communities included Adankrono, Kade Zongo, Wenchi, Soabe, Boaduwa all in the Kwaebibirem District, Asene, Oda, Jamaica, and Oda Zongo in the Birim Central Municipality and Etwereso, Praso and Apoli in the Birim South District.

The NPP presidential candidate also visited all the bereaved families, sympathized with them and donated undisclosed amount to support the funerals.

Nana Akufo–Addo in an interview expressed shock at the disaster in the area and blamed it on illegal miners who had diverted the course of most water bodies that hitherto flowed directly into the main Birim River.

He said the extent of damage the illegal miners were causing to the environment and the affected communities were unimagineable and called on all stakeholders to have a second look at the issue before more harm was done to society.

A heavy downpour in the early hours of Monday July 19, this year caused the rivers in the Atiwa area to overflow their banks.

Other streams and rivers such as the River Birim also took so much water leading to massive flooding aligning human settlement as well as farm lands.

A visit to the areas indicated that most communities were cut off from the rest of the country as flood waters blocked access roads leading to those areas compelling some young men to use canoe to convey people from one end to the other.

Nana Akuffo-Addo was accompanied in his two-day visit by Members of Parliament and both national and regional executives of the NPP.

First of all I would like to give thanks to the ALMIGHTY GOD for what has happen; he is the only one who deserved the thanks.
I wonder how others are talking about the illegal mining in the Akyem area, we have very prominent personalities in this area that are effected by this floods including The Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin ,whose State was affected mostly who is championing in environmental campaigns in the country as well as some part of the globe.
Besides the flooding, there is number of mistakes and disobedience that are course by some leaders within the country.
My concern is what are the, Honorable Parliamentarian’s, DCE’S, Regional Minister, local chiefs and the Police commanders, in their watch innocent people including student fall in galamsey manwholes and lost their life.
If these leaders failed to protect their own citizens within their areas why do we need to vote for them again in coming 2012 election, also if a chief failed to protect as they swear the oath, I suggest charges filled against them because there is no trust in this leaders and if found guilt they must remove from the stool for deferent candidate to be elected to replaced the prodigal once.
Once all this leaders sit unconcerned it make it looks like there is something fuzzy going on in their palms. I also think the present Government need to stretch her hands to every part of the country, (every Ghanaian living everywhere)
    Long live Abuakwa
    Long live Kotoku
    Long live Bosome
    Long live Ghana
