Two suspected robbers charged before court

Two of the four suspected armed robbers, who exchanged fire with the Police when they tried to rob a Chinese Construction Company at East Legon, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court.

The two accused persons are Hamza Yakubu, aka Aziz Zakari, 26, a second hand clothes seller at Old Fadama and Patrick Fada Ketor, 25, a taxi driver.

Two other robbers, who were killed by the Police, are Abu Sadik, aka Dogo, 26 and one Razak, 24 years.

The two accused persons are charged with attempted robbery and conspiracy to rob.

The two, who had no legal representation, pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded into prison custody to re-appear on August 8, 2011.

The Prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kofi Blagodzi, said on July 22, 2011, the Police had information that a group of armed robbers had planned to rob a Chinese Construction Company located at East Legon of huge sums of money being their weekly wages for their workers.

He said based on that report, the police on July 23 at about 0630 hours laid ambush near the company’s premises.

He said later a Nissan March taxi cab with registration No.GS 4978-09 with four men on board arrived at the head office of the company.

DSP Blagoszi said one of the engineers of the Chinese company called Li arrived at the office to pick one Wei in a Nissan pick-up with money to the construction site to pay their workers.

He said they took off heading towards Airport residential area but unknown to them, the taxi cab was following them.

He said the Police team also followed up and on reaching West Airport residential area, the armed robbers crossed the pick-up amidst firing.

He said the Police returned fire and in the process two of the robbers were hit and whilst conveying them to the hospital they lost their lives.

DSP Blagodzi also said investigations by the Police revealed that Abu Sadik, aka Dogo, had just benefited from the “Justice for all programme,” organized by the Judiciary for prison inmates who had been on remand for a long time without trial.

He said some of the exhibits retrieved from the accused persons included two locally made pistols, four live and spent cartridges and the Nissan March taxi cab.

He said the other exhibit, which was the GH¢10,000 the Chinese company had gone for to pay their workers, was intact.
