Ten judicial officers have left Accra for Canada on an eight-day court managers’ training programme.

The programme, which started on July 23, is under the Ghana-Canada Judicial Cooperation Project with the Federal Judicial Affairs to study the best practices in Canadian court administration.

As part of the training programme, participants will visit courts and government departments in Toronto and Ottawa.

A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Mrs Grace A. Tagoe, Director of Communications of the Judicial Service, said it was expected that upon completion of the study tour the officers would among other things gain knowledge and understanding of the organisation and functioning of the Canadian Judicial system with emphasis on key court administration, institutions and functions.

They would also acquaint themselves with specific activities and/or procedures of certain Canadian court administration institutions particularly as they relate to client service and communication; court administration; management skills and competencies; and records management.

The programme, which is being funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), falls under the Judicial Systems Improvement for Commerce and Economy (JUSTICE) Project.

The statement said the goal of the project was to contribute to sustainable economic and private sector development in Ghana, Jamaica and Peru by strengthening the legal and judicial enabling environment.

It further stated that specifically, the project would contribute to private sector development by assisting in strengthening the skills of judges and the capacities of the courts and court staff to efficiently and fairly process and determine cases connected to commercial, private sector development and business matters.

The statement said JUSTICE would focus specifically on the judicial education, training and skills development of judges and court personnel and the development of court administration capacities in order to contribute to improvements in the functioning of the courts and the strengthening of the court system.

The project will take place over two years, ending in May, 2012.
