Desist from politicising environmental issues – MP
Mr Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, has advised electorate to desist from politicising environmental issues since it undermined national efforts at combating sanitation problems.
The MP made the call when he led a six-hour massive clean-up exercise, which was embarked upon at Abossey Okai last Saturday in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association and Zoomlion to clear choked drains and gutters.
Mr Chaie said people should be made to appreciate the need for clean environment so as to help in stemming the spread of diseases.
He urged the people in the area to observe clean environmental practices all the time, adding that a healthy environment had a positive economic impact on the nation.
He acknowledged the contributions of the Spare Parts Dealers Association, the AMA and Zoomlion for their support to enhance sanitation and environmental hygiene.
Mr Joseph Paddy, Chairman of the Association in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said in collaboration with the AMA, the spare parts dealers had instituted a monthly cleanup campaign as a way to keep the environment safe and clean to avoid the outbreak of diseases.
He said the Association identified serious sanitation problems at Abossey Okai, which could lead to an outbreak, hence the need to organise the massive cleanup for everyone to be aware of how hazardous it was to their health.
Mr Paddy said the problem was no longer with the AMA but rather the people, adding that there was a limit to the efforts of the authorities, “but the biggest challenge rested on ourselves on how we perceived issues of sanitation within Abossey Okai.”
He appealed to the media to help to revive the self-help spirit of people to make them more responsive to environmental issues through sustainable public education.
The Chairman expressed gratitude to Zoomlion, the AMA and the MP for offering tools to undertake the exercise, which was a wakeup call to the community.
