Upper East Education Director appeals to assemblies to fund teachers’ awards

Mrs Agnes Atagbe, the Acting Upper East Regional Director of Education, has appealed to all District Assemblies in the Region to allocate some funds every year for the Best Teacher Award in their districts.

She commended the Bongo and Bawku Assemblies for the annual award scheme they had for teachers and urged the rest of the districts to follow their example.

Mrs Atagabe made the appeal at the 2010 Best Regional Teacher Award in Bolgatanga.

She expressed regret at the poor performance of pupils at the Basic School Education Certificate Examinations despite the motivation of teachers and called for a holistic approach to resolve the challenges militating against quality education in the region.

Fifteen teachers and three supporting staff received prizes that included refrigerators, gas cookers, colour television and certificates.

Mr Mark Woyongo, Upper East Regional Minister, said the government was committed to replacing all schools under trees with classroom blocks.

Mr Robert Ajene, a retired educationist, called on teachers to be committed to their profession.
