Wa East Assembly sets GH¢11m revenue target this year
Mr Ameen Salifu, the Wa East District Chief Executive has appealed to the Assembly and Unit Committee members to increase their revenue mobilization efforts to enable the Assembly meet its revenue target of GH¢11,227,667.63.
He said an amount of GH¢3,063,406.56 representing 28 percent of the targeted amount had so far been realized, adding that if they continued at that pace it might be difficult for them to reach or exceed the target.
Mr Salifu made the appeal during the Assembly’s ordinary meeting at Funsi in the Upper West Region.
He said the purpose for which districts were created was for them to mobilize their own material, human and financial resources for the development of the district rather than relying heavily on the District Assembly common fund.
Mr Salifu said the priority of the Assembly was on how to create an enabling environment to attract the appropriate organisations, human and financial resources to the District.
He said the Assembly would construct residential facilities for both senior and junior staff at the various ministries, departments and agencies including an office accommodation for the District Health Management Team.
Mr Salifu cited ‘Block Farming’ and the afforestation programmes as agricultural interventions that ensured food availability, jobs and incomes to the people.
He said the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) had also engaged a total of 598 young people from the District with more modules yet to be introduced.
Mr Salifu said the Assembly was on course to replace 75 percent of old and deplorable classroom structures with appropriate facilities.
He said already under construction were eleven, 6-unit classroom blocks at Manwe, Janfian, Tinniabe, Glang, Kandeh, Kpaglahi, Chasia, Gonou, Viise, Goripie and Tiisa including a 2-unit Kindergarten blocks as well as 3-unit classroom blocks at Duccie, Yaala, Kulung, Dupari and Naaha communities.
He said the Assembly intended to construct an additional six 6-unit classroom blocks at Kpanamuna, Yayuanbe, Talawona, Loggu, Viaha and Funsi.
Mr Salifu said the Assembly also intended to open a new school known as the Wa East District Assembly Model Primary and Junior High Schools at Funsi in addition to the only Roman Catholic School.
He said there would be the construction of two 2-unit Kindergarten blocks at Bisikan and Bonaa including a three Teachers’ quarters at Loggu, Jeyiri and Bayiri and added that he had no doubt in his mind that if they kept the momentum they would be able to replace all the mud-built schools in the District by the end of next year.
Mr Salifu said the Assembly was collaborating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to construct six Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) compounds at Kpalworgu, Tinniabe, Janfian, Chawuli, Kandeh and Bayiri.
He said the district was benefiting from 152 boreholes and two limited Small Town Water Systems courtesy the Sustainable Rural Water Project.
Mr Salifu expressed gratitude to the President John Evans Atta Mills, whose visit ensured that the District was connected to the national grid, adding that more communities would soon be connected to the grid.
He said about 110 kilometres of roads had been awarded on contract for re-gravelling.
