SIM card manufacturing company goes green, manufactures paper SIM

The global telecommunications industry is gathering momentum and innovation is taking centre-stage.

Not only are manufacturers and service providers in the mobile telecommunications industry thinking of value added products and services, but one company is also thinking of the environment.

French company, Oberthur Technologies has begun the manufacturing of SIM cards out of paper.

The Head of Product Marketing, Mobile Product Line – Cards & Services, Stephane Girodon, told ghanabusinessnews.com during the 8th West & Central Africa Com telecoms conference in Dakar that the company is already distributing the product in Europe and it is yet to introduce it in Africa.

Plastic SIM cards do not degrade and remain in the environment, but paper SIM cards are biodegradable and therefore, can be said to be environment friendly.

On the pouch housing the card, the company has written, “Natural product to protect the planet”. On the card itself it is written “An eco-friendly high-tech solution to meet our 21st century environmental challenges”.
