Finatrade Foundation supports University of Ghana College of Agriculture
Finatrade Foundation, a subsidiary of the Finatrade Group of Companies on Wednesday presented a cheque for GH¢30,000 to the University of Ghana College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences to train students in crop and livestock production.
The money would also be used in developing a model farm for students in the College to develop a sustainable system that would provide hands-on-training experience and entrepreneurial skills.
Dr Kobina Quansah, Member of the Finatrade Foundation Executive Council announced this during the inauguration of the Finatrade/University of Ghana, Model farm project in Accra.
The money would support the College to engage in massive cultivation of maize, tomatoes, okro, pepper, and cowpea and help the students to undertake practical training in addition to the theoretical academic work.
The model farm is the second after the successful establishment of a similar one at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology four years ago.
Dr Quansah said the collaboration between Finatrade and the University would encourage students to engage in farming after school and to move away from the routine search of white colour jobs after graduation.
“We strongly hope that, through this initiative, we will be able to build enthusiasm in the practical study and application of agricultural best practices among our students and farmers and to equip them to build solutions for the country’s agricultural challenges.”
Professor Benjamin K. Ahunu, Provost of the College who received the cheque commended Finatrade Foundation for their continuous support to the College.
He said apart from supporting in the establishment of the model farm, Finatrade Foundation had over the years sponsored undergraduate and graduate students of the College financially to cater for their academic needs.
“We are so grateful for all the support and promise that this money will be used for the support of students in this college and Ghanaians in general.”
