Sidelining Christian missions disastrous for nation’s education – Bishop

The Catholic Bishop of Sunyani, Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, has said any attempt to relegate the Christian missions to the background in the management of the country’s education could prove disastrous.

He said it was important policy makers ensured that such missions played a vital role in any education reforms.

“Not only should they retain the educational units, but they should in addition give the units more freedom and resources to continue to play their irreplaceable roles of providing holistic education to the nation’s youth.”

Bishop Gyamfi was addressing the 35th annual Conference of Managers of Catholic Education Unit in Kumasi.

“Catholic education: A credible option for self realization” was the theme.

He said it was not possible for any person or group to come up with any reason as to why the Christian missions could be removed from the education system.

It should not be lost on anyone that “the human being by nature yearns for a holistic or integral formation that enables him or her to achieve his or her spiritual, physical and social aspirations”, he added.

Bishop Gyamfi said education should help people to uphold values of social self-discipline, tolerance, forgiveness, hope and faith in God.

“Removing religious education from the curriculum therefore, is tantamount to taking away the soul or spirit of the child from the body”, he added.

Bishop Gyamfi commended the Managers for effective administration of the Catholic schools despite the challenging conditions under which they operated.

Ghana should remove public funding from religious organizations in dealing with the education of the children of the nation. If Ghanaians choose religious schooling then it should be privately funded. In school education culture should be the rule along with the traditional values that has strengthens Ghana for centuries. Traditional aspects and observance such as languages should be mandatory. Nationalism should be instilled while giving respect to ethnic groups, keeping in mind they are all Ghanaians first. There should be an awareness that Ghana is part of a greater black African continental family that must work together to make their presence strong amongst the world. Example: Ghana Constitution should define marriage as between a male and female(s) and not same sex arrangements. This is an age old internal tradition and should not be corrupted by outside foreign views and practices. Education is a reflection of a people’s culture. Once a child is properly educated he or she can go anywhere in the world to obtain skills. The education would have instructed them on where to apply those skills. That is to make their nation and peoples strong and self relying. Not depending on foreign aid and its stipulations. The schools should provide the students with the skills to control their own resources both human and natural. For example, it should train Ghanaians how to explore for and extract their own oil and other resources. There by keeping a large share of the pie in Ghanaian hands. For today Ghanaian people and future generations can enjoy. Religion and State should be separate entities and the Government should not respect any but guarantee citizens their right to practice which ever they choose or not to choose. Pledge allegance should be to Ghana and our People both near and far, not to a religion.
