Ghanaians, others denied entry into drinking bars in India
Media reports from India indicates that some African nationals including Ghanaians are been denied entry into pubs and bars in Bangalore.
The Hindustantimes, an Indian publication reports that these African nationals from Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria and Tanzania are denied entry because of security reasons, as the common belief is that all ebony-skinned people are ‘drug peddlers’, ‘scamsters’ and ‘trouble makers’.
Bangalore has a sizeable student population from the African continent.
The publication cited the head of marketing of one sports bars, which had the most number of complaints, as saying that “security reasons” and not racism that made them discourage blacks from coming, adding that the bar’s other clients were uncomfortable with black-skinned people around.
Meanwhile reports by the online edition of India’s national newspaper, The Hindu, says Bangalore Police Commissioner B.G. Jyothi Prakash Mirji has threatened stern action against pubs and bar owners if they were found guilty of racism.
