The Prestea Huni/Valley District Assembly has disbursed 30,000 Ghana cedis to 138 teacher trainees from the area, to help them complete their training.

The Assembly is planning to sponsor more trainees in order to attract teachers to fill the more than 300 teaching vacancies in the area.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Prestea Huni/Valley, Mr. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, disclosed these at the first General meeting of the Assembly at Bogoso.

It was attended by the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Francis Adu Blay Kwoffie, heads of department and Assembly Members.

Mr Cudjoe said the Assembly’s policy to support teacher trainees was yielding positive results and cited that 41 newly trained teachers have just been posted to the District.

The DCE said that the Assembly was also supporting students of Nursing Training College from the area to complete their course.

Mr. Cudjoe appealed to the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Assembly Members to convince qualified students to enroll in Teacher Training College and Nursing Training College to enable them to benefit from the Assembly’s education support.

He said this year the Assembly would organized a District Best Teacher award scheme, to honour hard working teachers in deprived areas.

Mr. Cudjoe appealed to the GES to strengthen its supervision role and ensure discipline in schools, to improve teaching and learning, to give meaning to the Assembly’s education policy.
