MTN is Africa’s Top Corporate Brand

South Africa headquartered telecommunications provider, Mobile Telecoms Network (MTN) Group has been recognised as the Top Corporate Brand for 2011 in Africa.

MTN Group was recognised at the fourth BrandFinance Global Nation Brands league awards.

The Group beat the following companies in the top 10 African corporate brands. Standard Bank (SBK), Absa (ASA), First National Bank (FNB), Nedbank (NED), Investec (INL), Telecom Egypt, Telkom (TKG), Guaranty Trust Bank and Mobinil.

The event which was hosted by Brand Africa in collaboration with Brand Finance was held May 25, 2011 in Johannesburg.

“Brand Africa  is an independent pan-African brand-centric initiative for African leaders, decision makers, citizens and influencers to shape the agenda and change perceptions of Africa by proactively driving Africa’s image, reputation and competitiveness in Africa and the World,” the organisations says on its website.

At the event, South Africa was acknowledged as the Most Valued African Nation Brand 2011, beating other countries including Ghana at the 8th position.

According to BrandFinance, the top 10 countries in Africa were South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco, Algeria, Angola, Tunisia, Ghana, Kenya and Libya.

Commenting on the award, MTN Marketing Executive, Mrs Jennifer Roberti said was cited by the website 4G Wireless as saying, “This shows the phenomenal growth of the MTN business in most operations, whether measured in terms of value share or subscriber numbers – for example nearly 70 per cent of MTN’s total subscribers are in African markets, with Nigeria contributing 40.2 million, Ghana 9 million, South Africa 19 million and Uganda 6.9 million and Cote d’Ivoire 5.4 million.”
