Roadmap to resolve impasse in leadership of AASU outlined

Mohammad Mumuni - Minister, Foreign Affairs

Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has outlined a roadmap to help resolve the current impasse between the  All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU) and the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

He said this comes as a solution to help tackle the crises on the leadership front of the AASU which several months of meetings and consultations had failed to resolve.

This was stated in a release issued to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

According to the release, the roadmap includes the establishment of a committee made up of representatives of the former and current AASU Executives, NUGS, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ministry of Education.

The committee would be tasked with drafting a new constitution in consultation with member unions which would then study them for their comments and proposals, and the committee when constituted would meet at the Ministers invitation to finalize the terms of reference for their assignment.

It said “the committee shall specify a time-frame within which to complete the drafting of the constitution and a congress would be convened to elect new officers”.

The release noted that, to ensure a smooth implementation of the road map the current executives of AASU should be dissolved with immediate effect.

The AASU secretariat and staff would also come under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration until further notice, adding that all AASU Bank Accounts should be frozen and the validity of signatories to those accounts also terminated.

The release however cautioned the general public to desist from dealing with any persons holding themselves up as executives of AASU until further notice.
