13-year Ivorian refugee dies at Ampain refugee camp

A 13-year old Dali Emmanuel, an Ivorian refugee at the Ampain Refugee camp in the Ellembelle District died last Friday.

The Ellembelle District Director of Health, Madam Elizabeth Conney confirmed the boy’s death to the Ghana News Agency on Saturday when the Ghana Red Cross Society went to the camp to present assorted items to them.

She said the deceased arrived at the camp from Cote d’Ivoire with Kidney problem and was referred to the Eikwe Government Hospital for treatment on Wednesday April 6, but his condition worsened last Friday night and eventually died at exactly 2200 hours.

The District Health Director, however, noted that the hospital had not conducted any autopsy on the corpse because it did not have a medical specialist and facilities for such examination.

When the GNA visited the camp last Saturday, arrangement was being made by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Red Cross Society and district health directorates for the mortal remains of the boy to be buried at the Kristan Camp in the Jomoro District.

Madam Conney added that 10 pregnant women at the Ampain refugee camp had so far delivered at Esiama and Eikwe hospitals respectively with one pregnant woman undergoing caesarean operation.

She said though there was a mobile clinic at the refugee camp, the release of funds for the purchase of drugs delayed and appealed to the authorities concerned to endeavour to release funds early to avert any problem.
