Mr Francis Asenso-Boakye, an aspiring New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Bantama, has demanded that, the Ghanaian movie with the title “Bantama Awarie” should be censored.

He said the contents were derogatory and disparaging, as it sought to portray the people of Bantama, particularly the women, as lazy and uncultured, who spent their time gossiping and doing nothing productive.

“The Office of the Copyright Administrator, together with the Ghana Actors Guild, Ministry of Information and other relevant authorities, should act decisively to truncate further sale of the movie, already out on the market”.

Mr Asenso-Boakye in a press statement said, he found it repulsive that the impression was also being created that women in the area were engaged in prostitution.

“This unwarranted negative stereotyping has the potential to inflict psychological and sociological damage, on especially the youth, and therefore everything must be done to censor the movie.”

The statement described residents of Bantama as brave, responsible and hardworking, who went about their daily activities with dignity and determination.

They therefore deserved respect and should not be portrayed in such negative light.
