Director of NGO appeals to government to assist teachers

The Director of a non-governmental organization said on Monday that school children roaming the streets because of the absence of their teachers in the classrooms could spell doom for the country.

Mr. Emmanuel Blessed Asum, Director of Destiny Kids World, told the GNA that students would capitalize on the industrial action by their teachers to indulge in social vices.

He said if the government dids not find a solution to the problem to enable the teachers to rescind their decision it would affect the performance of students in deprived areas in the impending Basic Education Certificate and West African Senior Secondary School Certificates Examinations.

Mr Asum said schools in the deprived areas lacked the basic logistics and infrastructure that would enable them to compete with their colleagues in the urban areas.

He appealed to the teachers, for the sake of the final year students, to return to the classrooms as most parents did not have the money to pay for extra tuition that could assist their children to excel in the examinations.

Mr Asum appealed to the government to see to the welfare of teachers to enable them to return to the classroom in the interest of the students.
