British High Commission receives record visa applications for Ghana-England match

The British High Commission in Accra says it has received an unprecedented record number of visa applications from Ghanaians who want to travel to the UK to watch the Ghana-England friendly match on March 29, 2011.

In a press release issued in Accra today March 17, 2011 and copied to ghanabusinessnews.com, the High Commission says in the last few weeks the visa section has seen a rise in visa applications due to the international friendly between the two countries but it is working in extra time to meet the demand. It however says, visas will be issued only on merit.

“Currently the UK Border Agency processes visa decisions well within the published 15 days and are doing all it can to meet this with the football related applications,” the release said.

The High Commission says it is working closely with the English Football Association, the Ghana Football Association and designated travel agents to resolve the problem.

It however urged applicants to ensure that all application forms including relevant documents from their travel agents and evidence in detail of their personal as well as financial circumstances in Ghana are fully and accurately completed.

“Simply having a ticket for the match does not guarantee entry into the UK. A well prepared application assists the Visa Section with their decision-making therefore applications submitted without full supporting documentation are less likely to be successful”, the release added.

The High Commission indicated that there is no guarantee however, that a final decision can be made prior to the proposed travel dates for the match. The visa process, it said, takes time, so applicants should endeavour to submit their applications promptly.

Already, the English Football Association (FA) says all match tickets for the Ghana-England match at Wembley stadium has been sold out completely and no further tickets will be made available.

“England’s game with Ghana on Tuesday 29 March has now completely sold out”, a statement from the English FA published on its website said on march 14, 2011.

The statement also urges all supporters not to travel unless they have a ticket for the match.
