Swedru teachers protest against Single Spine Salary

About 200 Basic School teachers in the Agona West Municipality on Thursday staged a peaceful protest march through the principal streets of Agona Swedru to register their displeasure against the Single Spine Salary Structure.

The protesters carried placards some of which read, “Poisonous Single Spine, “Professor do little”, “Atta Why”, “Atta must resign”, “teachers are not happy” and “Atta has deceived us”.

The three-hour protest march ended at the Ghana Education Service (GES) offices where Mr Ransford Ogoe, Secretary of the Agona Swedru Senior High School branch of the Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) presented the resolution on behalf of the teachers.

Mr Nelson Otu-Asamoah, Deputy Director of Education in charge of Finance and Administration of the Agona West Municipal Directorate of the GES, received the resolution on behalf of Mr Obeng Ampadu, Agona West Municipal Director of Education.

Mr Otu-Asamoah assured the teachers that the resolution would be forwarded to the appropriate quarters.

The resolution stated that the “teachers will not be able to escort the students for the Independent day celebration on Sunday March 6 if the mistakes in their salaries were not corrected immediately”.

It said the teachers would also embark on a sit down strike pending concrete response from the government, adding that they cannot invigilate the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)”.
