SWAG elects new officers

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), on Saturday held a successful election that saw three members of its Executive Committee retaining their seats.

Four new officers were, therefore, elected onto the Committee.

Ackah Anthony, Deputy Editor of the Graphic Sports, retained his position as the President of the Association. He was declared elected unopposed.

Miss Veronica Commey of the Ghana News Agency, the incumbent Treasurer, also went unopposed.

In a keenly contested race for the position of the General Secretary, William Dodzi Ezah also of the Ghana News Agency polled 34 votes to win a landslide victory.

Two times Ghana Journalists Association’s (GJA) Sports Journalist of the Year, Maurice Quansah of the Graphic Sports, who lost to Mr Ezah, had 16 votes.

Christian Abbew, Deputy Editor of the Ghanaian Times, lost his position as the Vice President to Mr Ben Ohene Aryeh, a sports writer and the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Tourist Board (GTB).

Ohene Aryeh polled 28 votes with Abbew attracting only 17 votes and another contender, Mr Isaac Franklin Boateng of the National Sports Council (NSS), polling five votes.

Sammy Heywood-Okine, Freelance Journalist and Producer of weekly sports programme on Ghana Television (GTV) “On the Ball”, had 32 votes as against Aristo Dotse’s 18 votes to win the position of the Deputy General Secretary.

Mathias Tibu and Frank Ampadu were elected Executive Members to make the list of seven to run the affairs of the Association for the next four years.

Nii Amarkai Amarteifio, a patron of SWAG, who observed the election, commended members for the civil manner the exercise, was conducted.

He said the conduct of the election was a demonstration of maturity by members of the Association.

Nii Amarteifio urged the officers to work hard to enhance the image of the Association.
