Mobile Web Ghana organises ICT training for young entrepreneurs

Mobile Web Ghana (MWG) a community of Ghanaian mobile entrepreneurs and people interested in the Mobile Web, is organizing a training course in mobile technology and business for 20 young local entrepreneurs.

The four-week course is to help local talents to build mobile phone applications which would be relevant for their communities and develop their own desktop websites.

Mr Max Froumentin, Programme Manager, World Wide Web (WWW) Foundation, addressing the opening session in Accra on Thursday said the course was to provide discussion forums, networking events and links between application developers, mobile network operators and established businesses.

He said trainees would have the opportunity of listening to various talks from experienced entrepreneurs and business experts including Vodafone Ghana.

Mr Froumentin commended the managers of MWG for the initiative, saying it was important for young entrepreneurs to realise the full potential and benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in businesses.

He noted that globally the world was going mobile and therefore training was critical to expose young Ghanaians to form a community of mobile entrepreneurs.

Mr Froumentin said it had been realised that although many university graduates had the basic knowledge in the use of computers they did not know how to apply such knowledge in establishing their own businesses.

He said the WWW Foundation therefore chose Ghana for its maiden training due to the booming mobile telecommunications industry and the vibrant local entrepreneurship spirit among the youth.

Mr Derrick Appiah, Head of Enterprises, Vodafone Ghana, co-sponsors of the programme, said about GH¢15,000 had been earmarked for the best and second best project works after the training course to enable the winners develop their projects.

He said the best project work would be awarded GH¢10,000 while the second best project would receive GH¢5,000 and encouraged the trainees to develop excellent project ideas that would enhance mobile phone services in the country.
