Police appeal for more parking areas in Accra Metropolis

Ghana Police Service has appealed to Ministry of Transport and Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to create more congenial parking areas in the Metropolis.

This would help curb congestion as well as prevent drivers from flouting traffic rules and regulations.

The appeal was made by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alexander Kweku Obeng, in-charge of Education, Research and Training at Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday.

ASP Obeng said lack of adequate parking areas in the metropolis forced most drivers to stop at inappropriate places to pick and alight passengers resulting in traffic congestion.

He said this phenomenon had become one of the challenges confronting the police and drivers, making it difficult to prosecute offending drivers for parking at unauthorised places.

ASP Obeng pointed out that the police always had problems with drivers who accused them of infringing on their rights by not allowing them to park to pick and alight passengers.

“We cannot continue to arrest them but to caution them until adequate parking areas have been created. The stations are too small to accommodate all the vehicles making operations at the stations difficult “, he added.

He said the police were always available to ensure peace, protect life and property but were handicapped to control the increase in vehicular traffic in the metropolis.

Mr Kwame Asante, a driver, called on stakeholders in the industry to provide more parking areas for drivers, to prevent them from parking at unauthorised areas.
