Water supply resumes in Gomoa East, Gomoa West

There was a spontaneous jubilation in the twenty-nine Communities in Gomoa East and Gomoa West Districts of the Central Region when water supply resumed in the communities last Friday after nine months’ suspension.

When water started gushing from the taps the people cheered heartily with some remarking that “our suffering has come to end”.

Water supply to the communities was disconnected when the main transmission Pipe line broke down, following the flood disaster that hit Agona Swedru and Agona Nyakrom on June 20, 2010, which caused havoc in those towns.

Mr Baffour Offosu-Addae, Agona West Municipal Manager of the Ghana Water Company (GWC) Limited, said the population of about 650 in the two Districts were now enjoying a 24-hour water supply, adding that the staff of the GWC had also carried out minor repairs on the lines to avert another interruption in water supply.

Mr Ofosu-Addae appealed to the Electricity Company to ensure regular electricity supply at the main head works at Agona Kwanyako to ensure the uninterrupted pumping of water to the communities.

He commended the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr Kweku Botwe for prompt assistance given to the Agona West branch of the company when the disaster occurred.

According to him a successful test was done on the transmission line two weeks ago after the completion of the connection works by the Denys Company, a Holland-based Construction firm.

A GNA survey in some of the communities has revealed that the people have been enjoying potable water after the test transmission.

Mrs Efuah Mensah at Gomoa Gyaman who sells sachet water, expressed joy that water had begun flowing from their taps thereby relieving school children of the burden of roaming in search of water from wells and other unhygienic sources.

Mr Kwabena Fosu, a resident of Gomoa Oguaa told the GNA that the people were extremely happy about the restoration of water supply to the affected communities in the two districts.
