Shoprite supports OrphanAid Africa

Management of Shoprite, on Saturday presented a cheque for GH¢10,000 to OrphanAid Africa, a non- governmental organisation (NGO) that specialises in rescuing children from orphanages and settling them with their families.

The donation was aimed at strengthening the organisation to deepen its impact on more lives to facilitate national development.

Mr Kwame Larbi-Siaw, Marketing Manager of Shoprite, who presented the cheque on behalf of Management in Accra, said the gesture formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to support Ghanaian children.

He said an amount of GH¢1.00 was raised from their royal customers in aid of the project.

Mr Larbi-Siaw, said management was happy to associate itself with the worthy cause.

Blakk Rasta, a Reggae Musician and Radio Presenter, who received the cheque on behalf of the NGO, noted that some people established orphanages as a cover for child trafficking and abuse.

He said the extended family system was a wonderful safety net for Ghanaian children, which should replace orphanages.

He thanked all customers and management of Shoprite for their contribution to OrphanAid.

Meanwhile a research conducted by OrphanAid Africa revealed that out of the nearly 5,000 children living in orphanages in Ghana, 80 per cent had families willing to care for them.

“Many of the children are detained by the orphanage operators against their will, while others have families who can not care for them due to poverty,” it said.
