MMDAs to submit Sanitation Management Action Plan

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council on Monday directed all Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to submit their Sanitation Management Action Plans to the office of the Regional Minister before February 4.

It said notices reaching the Council indicated that not much had been done by the MMDAs in the Region to rid their areas of filth.

A statement signed by Mr F.T. Nartey, Chief Director for the Regional Minister, noted that there were heaps of garbage not cleared for months now and main drains, gutters and waterways were also choked with plastic and other waste materials.

The Coordinating Council directed all MMDAs in the Region, as a measure against any outbreak of diseases and flooding, to embark on massive regular monthly clean-up exercises and desilt all drains and gutters.

It also asked them to clear all heaps of garbage in their areas of jurisdiction and re-engineer all final waste disposal sites and ensure that these sites were properly managed.

“Any Assembly confronted with any challenges in respect of this special exercise should contact the office of the Regional Coordinating Council for further discussion,” it added.
