Driver jailed 10 months for stealing cocoa

The Breman Asikuma District Magistrate Court has sentenced a 22-year-old driver to 10 months imprisonment in hard labour for stealing five bags of dried cocoa beans valued at GHC 600 belonging to the Produce Buying Company.

Kofi Bentsil from Breman Asikuma pleaded guilty.

Chief Inspector Gershon Awuyee told the court presided over by Mrs Cynthia Andy that on December 26, 2010, the Breman Asikuma Police received information that thieves had broken into the cocoa shed of the Produce Buying Company at Breman Fankyenekor.

He said the police on the way to the village, intercepted a taxi loaded with five bags of dried cocoa beans belonging to the company.

In the taxi were Bentsil and another colleague whose name was given as Abrentsieye, now at large.

The prosecution appealed to the general public to help provide information on the whereabouts of Abrentsieye.

The court ordered the police to return the cocoa to the Company.
