Investigate alleged financial malfeasance against NPP functionaries – Rawlings
Former President Jerry John Rawlings on Friday reiterated his call on President Mills’ administration to investigate alleged financial malfeasance and abuse of office against functionaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In addition, it must re-investigate various murder cases, including the death of Ya-na Abdulai Yakubu Andani II, King of Dagbon and Alhaji Issa Mobilla, Former Northern Regional Chairman of the Convention People’s Party.
Flight Lieutenant Rawlings noted that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) would lose the trust reposed in it by the people if the cases were not investigated, tackled and the perpetrators punished.
“We will be institutionalising corruption when these issues are not resolved once and for all,” he told party activists, sympathisers and cadres of the 31st December Revolution, at a public lecture to mark the 29th anniversary of the event in Accra.
The lecture was on the theme: “Integrity for Sustainable Democracy.”
Flt Lt Rawlings warned that Election 2012 might be tough for the NDC if the Government through its inactions cover up crimes of NPP functionaries.
This, he said, would destroy the social fabric and affect the people’s trust when government adhered to “politically incorrect decisions it had made so far”.
President Rawlings observed that political power could be seductive and easily sway people to lose touch with reality and urged the party leadership not to depart from the values of probity and accountability, integrity and truth that had been the principles of the NDC even in opposition.
Mr Samuel Nuamah-Donkor, Former Minister of Health, said the revolution marked a turning point in the country’s economic transformation.
He said all sectors of the economy, including transportation, were in a state of disrepair and bushfires had virtually brought the cocoa industry to its knees.
Despite these difficulties, Mr Nuamah-Donkor said, it was the good leadership of President Rawlings that restored confidence and re-built the broken down infrastructure.
He called on party activists and sympathisers to remain faithful to the social democratic agenda and foster unity in the party based on the core principle of providing life to the poor and vulnerable.
Mr Nuamah-Donkor said the way forward for the party was not factions, saying that while there could be divisions; these should help promote healthy debate to transform the party to meet the needs and aspirations of the people.
